Women in the 1920's and 1930's

Australian women before the war were quiet, polite and modest, but in the 1920'swomen changed suddently in both appearance and the actions they preformed. As the soldiers left for war in Europe, womens become independant and began to fill the jobs left by the soldiers. Women that worked were working for half the pay men received and if they leave their duty as a mother or housekeeper, the society frowned towards them.

The return of soldiers to the workforce, women were not ejected from their jobs as they worked more efficiently then men and were pad less then them. The jobs women mostly did included factory labour and domestic work, nursing, teaching, clerical, secretarial and typing in offices also shop assisting.

 

Women Fashion

Women fashion experienced dramatic changes in the early 1920's, they were called "flappers". they cut their hair short, skirt lengths were shortened to knee lengthand the dresses they wore were lighter and brighter. Women also started to put on make-up and lipstick.  Dresses were lighter and brighter and shorter than ever before. Fashion designers played with fabric colors, textures and patterns to create totally new styles of dress.Women threw away their corsets and fashion finally had adapted , as fashion changed so did women. some women smoked cigarettes, drank alcohol, swore and became more confident expressed their opinion in public among men and also in the 1920 women were able to vote.
