The construction of Sydney Harbor Bridge

The idea of the Sydney harbour bridge was brought up when the settlement soon grew but found that it could not expand as readily to the north, where it was met by the sea. The problem was adressed in 1815 by the convict and architect, Francis Greenway who wanted to construct a bridge which would enable a town to grow on the northern shore of Port jackson. The Sydney Harbour Bridge was built, during the Great Depression. It was an attempt to get the economy flowing again. The bridge, was maybe one of the greatest industrial achievements of the century. It measured over 1 km long and is the longest arch bridge in the world. It was interrupted and held back by many aspects such as people disagreeing.

It was not until over a century later that work actually began on the bridge. It took some time for this to become a reality with design plans invited in 1900. All the plans were considered unsuitable and so the drive for the bridge crossing stopped. The Sydney Harbour Bridge construction started in 1924 and took 1,400 men eight years to build at a cost of £4.2 million. Six million hand driven rivets and 53,000 tonnes of steel were used in its construction. Many people suffered due to the bridge as it wiped out peoples home in order for it to be constructed at that particular place.
